I’ve had a head for business since studying Maths, Business Studies and Accounting at Selby College. That sparked a love of using data to paint a picture that has lasted for more than 20 years.
This led me to study an Accounting and Finance degree at Leeds Metropolitan University. After graduating, I joined a national brewery as a Trainee Accountant. I worked there for 15 years, completing my Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) qualifications during my time.
I gained experience in both the retail and manufacturing sides of the business, understanding the whole brewing process from grain to glass. This allowed me to apply my management accounting skills practically. I played a crucial role in controlling and reducing costs and highlighting opportunities to improve margins.
After the brewery, I worked for a major animal feed company, where I led a team of 11 covering roles including management accounts, sales ledger, credit control, purchase ledger, payroll and stock control. As well as being able to personally perform these roles, my main responsibility was managing the team.
I founded Effective Accountancy in 2025 to help small and medium-sized businesses in Yorkshire like yours turn your financial data into practical solutions.
Outside of work, you’ll find me on the Yorkshire coast spending time with my wife, our two young girls and our cockapoo puppy, Bella.
